1) Important Documents 📄

  • ID card or passport
  • Health insurance card
  • Maternity record & birth plan (if applicable)
  • Allergy pass / important findings (e.g., blood type, medications)
  • Marriage certificate or declaration of parental custody (if needed)
  • Hospital registration (if done in advance)

2) Packing Before Birth 🧳

Tip: Two bags are practical: delivery room bag (small) and ward bag (stays in the car/room initially).

  • Comfortable clothes for arrival (nothing tight)
  • Loose hair ties, lip balm, water bottle
  • Snacks, dextrose / dates
  • Slippers / non-slip socks
  • Document folder within reach (see above)

3) For the Delivery Room 🌙

  • Long, comfortable shirt or loose nightgown
  • Warm socks, possibly a hooded jacket
  • Massage oil / hot water bottle / cherry pit pillow
  • Drinks with straws, light snacks
  • Wet wipes, small towels
  • Music playlist or breathing app & headphones

4) For Postpartum & Ward 🧴

  • 2–3 loose nursing/sleep shirts, 1 cardigan
  • 2–3 leggings / jogging pants (high-waisted, comfortable)
  • Nursing bras, nursing pads, large underwear (nicer: "Mom-Pants" 😉)
  • Robe, slippers, shower sandals
  • Toiletries bag: toothbrush, shampoo, shower gel, deodorant (mild), brush
  • Large maternity pads / mesh underwear (hospital often provides some, but extra never hurts)
  • Own towel & washcloth
  • Light snacks & tea bags (nursing tea, fennel)

5) For Baby 👶

  • 2–3 bodysuits (size 50/56)
  • 2 pairs of pants / sleepsuits
  • 1–2 cardigans or wrap shirts
  • Hat & 2 pairs of socks
  • Burp cloths (3–4 pieces)
  • Blanket or muslin cloth for cuddling & supplementing
  • For the ride home: weather-appropriate outfit + infant car seat

Note: Diapers & wipes are usually available at the hospital – a quick inquiry is enough.

6) Tech & Organization 📱

  • Mobile phone + charger (a long cable is golden)
  • Power bank
  • List of important contacts (partner, family, midwife)
  • Prepared notes: birth preferences, questions for the team

7) For Dad / Birth Partner 🤝

  • Comfortable clothes + warm layer (delivery rooms are often cool)
  • Snacks, water, chewing gum
  • Charger, headphones
  • Small change / card for parking & vending machines
  • Deodorant, toothbrush, possibly a fresh T-shirt
  • Task: Stay calm, count breaths, remind to drink – teamwork! 🧡

8) Season & Optional ☀️❄️

  • Summer: Thin muslin blanket, sun hat (for the way home, no direct sun)
  • Winter: Warm overall / footmuff for infant car seat (no thick jackets under the harness!)
  • Optional: Own baby soap/cream, favorite pillow, small string lights (makes it cozy)

Mini Checklist to Tick Off ✔

  • Documents: ID, card, maternity record, findings
  • Delivery room bag: shirt, socks, drinks, music
  • Ward: comfortable clothes, hygiene, maternity pads
  • Baby: 2–3 outfits, hat, socks, burp cloths
  • Tech: phone, charger, power bank
  • Birth partner: snacks, charger, parking
  • Way home: infant car seat, weather-appropriate outfit

Small reminder: Pack your bag around weeks 34–36, place it visibly, and put documents on top. The rest should be light – you're coming to cuddle, not to carry suitcases.

Finally

Every birth is different – make it as comfortable as possible for yourself and listen to your gut feeling. With this checklist, you have the essentials and enough space for what truly matters: your first time together. 🧡
